World Geography MCQs with Explanations

The Bosphorus carries Black Sea water south into the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles then links the Sea of Marmara to the Aegean. Gibraltar joins the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, Hormuz the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, and Malacca the Andaman Sea to the South China Sea.

The Panama Canal, linking the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific, opened to traffic on 15 August 1914 and replaced the long Cape Horn and Strait of Magellan route. The Suez Canal (opened 1869) joins the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and has no locks because both seas are at similar levels.

Aconcagua (about 6,961 m) in the Argentine Andes is the highest summit outside Asia, and the highest point in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres. Among the other options, Denali is the highest peak in North America (about 6,190 m), Kilimanjaro the highest in Africa (5,895 m), and Elbrus is usually counted as Europe's highest.

Kilimanjaro is a free-standing dormant volcano in northeastern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border; its highest point, Uhuru Peak, is 5,895 m. The commonly tested trap is Mount Kenya (about 5,199 m), Africa's second-highest peak, which lies inside Kenya.

The Caspian Sea, at roughly 371,000 square kilometres, is the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth, and is counted as the world's largest lake. Lake Superior is the largest lake by surface area among freshwater lakes, while Lake Baikal holds the largest volume of freshwater.

The Danube flows east from the Black Forest and drains into the Black Sea through the Danube Delta, shared mainly by Romania and Ukraine. Its course is usually counted as passing through or bounding ten countries, the most of any river, which is why it features so often in mapping questions.

The Great Barrier Reef stretches for some 2,300 km off Queensland, Australia, in the Coral Sea. Indonesia and the Philippines sit in the nearby Indo-Pacific 'coral triangle', which is why they are tempting, but the reef system itself belongs to the Australian coast.

The Atacama runs about 1,000 km down the Pacific side of the Andes, largely within northern Chile, shadowed by the Andes and the cold Humboldt Current. The similar-looking distractor Namib is in Namibia, and the Kalahari spans Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

A doubly landlocked state is surrounded entirely by other landlocked states, and only Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan qualify. Switzerland, Austria and Hungary are landlocked, but each touches at least one coastal country, so none of them is doubly landlocked.

Greenland, at about 2.16 million square kilometres, is the largest island; Australia is treated as a continental landmass rather than an island. New Guinea is the second-largest island and Borneo the third.

From the Strait of Georgia eastward to the Lake of the Woods, the border follows the 49th parallel, fixed by the Anglo-American Convention of 1818 and extended by the Oregon Treaty of 1846. The 54th parallel is remembered only from the 1844 'Fifty-four forty or fight' slogan, which was never the settled boundary.

The Yangtze rises on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and runs about 6,300 km east to the East China Sea at Shanghai, entirely inside China, making it the longest river contained within a single country. The Mekong, by contrast, is the great international river of South-East Asia, flowing through six countries to the South China Sea.

Russia covers about 17.1 million square kilometres, roughly eleven percent of the world's inhabited land, and spans eleven time zones. Canada is the second-largest country at about 9.98 million square kilometres, which makes it the strongest distractor.

The Dead Sea shore, fed only by the Jordan River and lost to evaporation, lies about 430 m below sea level and is the lowest exposed land point on Earth. The Caspian Sea depression is also below sea level, but only by about 28 m, and Lake Assal in Djibouti is far shallower at about 155 m below sea level.
